What is a flow battery

Flow batteries are a special type of battery where energy is stored in liquid electrolytes kept in external tanks. Electrolytes containing active substances (e.g., zinc, bromine, vanadium, or other materials) circulate through an electrochemical cell with the help of pumps. In the cell, redox reactions occur, enabling energy storage or release depending on whether the battery is being charged or discharged. Flow batteries are highly adaptable in terms of capacity, as they can store more energy simply by increasing the size of the tanks. They have a long lifespan since the electrodes do not experience significant mechanical or chemical stress during operation. These batteries are very reliable and safe, making them ideal for stationary applications such as energy storage systems for solar or wind power plants. Additionally, they allow for quick regeneration by replacing the depleted electrolyte, which is a distinct advantage in certain scenarios.
